Re-Ordered
I’ve re-ordered the set because I didn’t feel like the last image (previously the 4th image) fit with the rest of the set. I also swapped the position of the 2nd and 3rd images.
It’s 90×90 Plus 91×91
My program went through the full process for both board sizes – starting with 12,000 levels and generating images for the top 60.
It wasn’t my plan initially to combine the two sets – but I couldn’t see a great set from the 90×90 images, and the first 91×91 images were ready to look at just 3 days after I saw my first 90×90 image. Two of the five images are from the 90×90 levels, with the other three are 91×91.
Some Odd Numbers
- My program generated the 91×91 levels a lot faster than it did the 90×90 levels – between 25 and 40% faster depending on the settings I used to generate the levels.
- Don’t ask me why – it was a surprise to me. 90×90 (not 91×91) appears to be the outlier though – I was expecting the levels to generate a lot faster than they did.
- 4 out of the 12000 90×90 levels were generated with a different line algorithm than the rest. This was a mistake – the algorithm is really bad.
- I caught this during the ~8 hour similarity filtering phase when I saw that the top 4 ranked levels had consecutive grid IDs.
- they scored really highly because they were different (in a bad way) from the rest of the levels.
- Three of the four levels made the original set of 60 levels (I replaced them before imaging).
- The 4th level made it into the final 100 levels but finished 99th/100.
- The level had the misfortune of being paired with one of the other 3 levels for 2 consecutive rounds after being ranked 2nd with 200 levels remaining.
- The 4 levels score really poorly against each other – the max score portion of the sim filter formula penalizes them severely for this when paired together.
- I caught this during the ~8 hour similarity filtering phase when I saw that the top 4 ranked levels had consecutive grid IDs.
91×91 Restored My Interest After 90×90 Nearly Took It Away
After I made the 80×80 Remake I was really looking forward to the 90×90 levels (120×120 suffered as a result). I was really disappointed.
I wasn’t expecting 91×91 to be much better – and to be completely honest, my evaluation would shift dramatically if not for two of the levels. These two levels were exactly what I was hoping for after working on the remake – a really good, new simple pattern, and a really good, new complex pattern. More info on the notes page.
This Time, I Really Believe It
I think this is the best set of 5 images of any set to date. Not only are all of the images really good individually, they also work very well together as a set (in my opinion). There is a lot of variety in both the patterns and the colors used for each image.
I Might Eat My Words
Of course, this isn’t the first time I’ve thought the latest set is the greatest thing since sliced bread – and my evaluation usually changes down the road. A perfect example is the set closest to this one in terms of board size. I thought 95×85 was so good, that I included 60 images for the set. In retrospect, it’s probably my least favorite set since before the original 80×80 set. That even includes the 111×99 disaster, which I at least find interesting for it’s uniquely uninteresting patterns.
